Independence Day Special

It’s August 15th and India is celebrating its 59th birthday as a free nation. It’s been a long journey since then and now the Indians have more brands to choose from than ever before, more TV channels to while away time than ever before, more cinema multiplexes to watch the same old Bollywood flicks that we never get tired of watching, and, most importantly more drive and ambition in the people than ever thought possible.

For those of you who are outside India (be it NRIs or foreigners) interested in India and the state of things its in today, India Today magazine (subscription required to read online) has a special Independence Day Edition which is quite a steal as it has some commendable collection of stats, facts, and other opinion on the subcontinent. It’s a collector’s item.

The most densely populated place on earth

As kids we learn about all these little facts about humans and geography like the state of Assam in Eastern India has the highest rainfall, Tokyo is the world’s most densely populated city in the world etc etc. And here’s one new one I learned from Joe Sacco’s graphic book journalistic travelogue ‘Palestine’.


The High Cost of High Priced Bottled Water

Just read an interesting article in The New York Times Sunday Magazine “Consumed” series. Its about a new brand name mineral bottled water called Ethos. Started by two ex-MicKinsey consultants, the concept behind Ethos is to provide water to the third world by selling water at a premium price to discerning concerned first world citizens. They were bought out by Starbucks and a bottle costs $1.80 of which 5 cents goes to water projects in the underdeveloped world. The founders explain their brand objective as “about being part of the global community and making a difference and enabling those consumers who want to, quote-unquote, do more.”

The other brazen facts picked up from the article are:

> Recycling advocates contend that 90 percent of water bottles end up in landfills.

> The Earth Policy Institute recently argued that producing the bottles to meet American demand consumes 1.5 million barrels of oil a year.

> S.U.V. profits finance third-world alternative-energy projects.
